Religions and Worldviews:

Information for parents

A safe, respectful space for your child’s learning

As parents, nothing matters more than knowing your child is safe, respected, and supported at school. Religions and Worldviews is designed with this front of mind. It provides a curriculum-aligned way for students to learn about the diverse beliefs and values that shape Australia, without promoting any one perspective.

Not Religious Instruction

Religions and Worldviews is different from Special Religious Instruction (SRI) or Religious Education classes of the past. Religions and Worldviews is:

  • Taught by registered teachers, not volunteers
  • Delivered within the existing curriculum, not as an extra class
  • Inclusive of every student, regardless of belief or background

What this means for your child

Through Religions and Worldviews, students:

➡️ Reflect on their own worldview—religious or non-religious

➡️ Learn to understand and respect others

➡️ Build skills in dialogue, empathy and critical thinking

➡️ Explore life’s “big questions” in a safe, age-appropriate way

This approach helps students feel seen and included while preparing them for life in a diverse society.

Why it matters

In a world where difference can sometimes lead to misunderstanding, Religions and Worldviews gives young people the tools to engage with curiosity and respect. That matters not only for their own friendships and wellbeing, but for the kind of society they will help build.

Reassurance for families

  • No child is left out: every student participates equally.
  • No one worldview is privileged: religious and non-religious perspectives are treated with equal respect.
  • Independent evaluation: The University of Melbourne Faculty of Education is assessing the program’s impact to ensure it benefits all students.
